Nigerian one-man comedy show heads to Sheffield for UK debut

A one-man comedy show curated and created in Nigeria is making its UK debut in Sheffield this month. [June]

The play Ìlóyá, written and performed by Oluwasegun Lafup Ogundipe, captures the tale of a young Nigerian, Mokan, who tries to navigate different challenges on his way to achieve the Nigerian Dream. Described as a comical exploration of his challenges and obstacles while trying to achieve his goals at home as he contemplates migration, the unique play will be staged at Utopia Theatre’s Creative Hub on Rockingham Gate.

Oluwasegun Lafup Ogundipe is a Capetown-based Nigerian standup comedian, actor and theatre producer. “Ìlóyá “ is a Yoruba word meaning “the journey begins”. Ìlóyá sheds light on the funny realities people face while pursuing their dreams and how they make peace with the outcomes.

Mojisola Kareem, CEO and Artistic Director at Utopia Theatre, is directing the performances – set to be staged on Saturday 22 and Sunday 23 June at 7pm.

Kareem said: “The fact that Segun’s first UK staging of this brilliant show is taking place at Utopia Theatre in Sheffield is a clear sign that we’re forging ahead with our plans to support as many artists with their creative journeys as possible; showing authentic and original work is very much our mantra. This promises to be a thrilling and hilarious night and I cannot wait to feel the energy in the room.”

The comedy show follows in quick succession from the success of Utopia Theatre’s recent Africa Day celebrations, when more than 200 people enjoyed music, drumming, dance, poetry, speeches and much more.

Ogundipe added: “I’m really pleased to have the opportunity to bring this show to Sheffield for its UK debut; I’ve heard so much about Utopia Theatre and the work it’s doing to really support African culture and arts. To be part of that while showcasing my unique show is such a dream.”
