Welcome to SoAfrica Festival

Welcome to the first ever SoAfrica Festival, celebrating African culture, art and heritage in Yorkshire! For years I have travelled from Yorkshire to London for African cultural events and festivals. This year I decided to curate a festival here in the centre of Sheffield at the Crucible Theatre. I am delighted that the vision I've had for years – to bring the spirit of Africa to the heart of Yorkshire – has become a reality, thanks to the support of Sheffield Theatres Trust and Arts Council England.

Join us as we celebrate Sheffield as an internationally diverse city. SoAfrica Festival brings you some of the best known names in African music, theatre, dance and storytelling. Over two days our local, national and international festival artists promise an eclectic range of exciting, stimulating and uplifting experiences.

We are passionate about exploring and expanding the idea of what is is to be African. This is a unique opportunity to connect, learn, network, discuss and socialise. All are welcome! My hope is that SoAfrica Festival will become an annual one week long festival taking place in in the whole of Yorkshire, consisting the best known names in African music, theatre, dance and storytelling, film screenings ,visual arts and other complementary events. It is hoped that this will be an opportunity for Yorkshire audiences to engage with African stories and industry professionals from the continent.

My aim is to establish SoAfrica Festival as a major annual event within the Yorkshire cultural calendar, whilst also maintaining a national profile as one of the leading African festival platforms. The festival aims to cater to a varied and diverse audience from all over Yorkshire, the UK and further afield. A core purpose of SoAfrica Festival work is its partnership development with various cultural and artistic networks and venues, with particular efforts made towards engaging the African diaspora community living in Yorkshire. It is my hope that SoAfrica festival will grow from strength to strength.
