We’re pleased to announce that Unity Theatre Trust has awarded a generous grant to Utopia Theatre for the running of our Creative Hub.
Through their funding we are able to bring together some of the world’s leading African artists to share their knowledge, inspire the next generation, and strengthen African Caribbean communities through engaging in arts and culture.
Mojisola Kareem, CEO and Artistic Director at Utopia Theatre, said: “Our Creative Hub stands as a testament to the transformative power of the arts. It embodies a dynamic convergence of artistic brilliance, knowledge exchange, and community empowerment. Through workshops, events, and 1:1 sessions, we are nurturing a sustainable talent pool, amplifying visibility for black artists, and fostering a sense of belonging within our diverse tapestry of black African communities.

Over the next 12 months, it’s expected that more than 1500 individuals will benefit from attending sessions and visiting our Creative Hub. From exhibitions showcasing local talent to skill development workshops covering a range of topics such as puppetry, acting, tie-dye, African dance, and music making, we are providing invaluable opportunities for artistic growth and expression. Additionally, our collaboration and networking events will facilitate connections between artists, creators, and community members, fostering a supportive and connected creative community.
Research, including the recent Government survey ‘Taking Part in the Arts, Culture and Heritage’ 2023, highlights the disparities in arts participation among ethnic groups. We are actively addressing these inequalities by providing opportunities for black individuals in Sheffield and surrounding areas to pursue careers and bolster skills in the arts.
Unity Theatre Trust’s support will match fund Arts Council England and Sheffield City Council’s support to provide not just a space for artistic expression; but also the building of a community, fostering inclusivity, and paving the way for a more diverse and equitable future, making a tangible difference through breaking down barriers and enabling inspiration.
