Noughts and Crosses: Amateur Community Production by Lantern Theatre
Step into a world where the rules of society are flipped on their head and everything you thought you knew is challenged. Noughts and Crosses, adapted for the stage by Dominic Cooke, takes Malorie Blackman’s renowned novel and turns it into a gripping play that explores racism, privilege, and a love that defies the boundaries of society.
This Lantern Theatre production brings together diverse voices and perspectives, breathing new life into this story. With powerful performances and a narrative that speaks to our times, Noughts and Crosses is a play that will make you think, feel, and question long after the final scene.
Utopia Theatre are always proud to support our theatre community, so we have assisted in the role of rehearsal venue support and casting for this production to provide our audiences and local young people with the opportunity to gain valuable industry experience and to break into the world of acting.
We wish Lantern the best of luck going forwards with this show and we can’t wait to see how they bring the story to life!

A Chat with the Director: Nigel Turner

“The Lantern production of Noughts and Crosses was launched a few weeks ago with two audition sessions at the Lantern Theatre and two in the Creative Hub at Utopia. We had over 30 auditionees whose energy and commitment has made casting the show really difficult. The warm and welcoming space at Utopia really brought the best out of the auditionees!
Assistant Director and Death and The King’s Horseman Community Ensemble member Sarafina Maneus developed some challenging routines for the groups to get to grips with. Utopia have been great to work with and with casting almost complete I am excited to get started on the show and to get down to working on this ambitious project.”

An Exciting New Chapter For Community Ensemble Star

This week we caught up with Death and The King’s Horseman Community Ensemble cast member Sarafina Maneus about her latest exciting venture in the theatre world. Sarafina has been appointed as Assistant Director for Noughts and Crosses– an amateur community production by Lantern Theatre.
Utopia Theatre are always proud to support the theatre community, so we have assisted in the role of casting for this production to provide our audiences and local young people with the opportunity to gain valuable industry experience and to break into the world of acting.
“My First Steps into Directing
Being a first-time Assistant Director is both exciting and a little nerve-wracking, but I couldn’t have asked for a better project than Noughts & Crosses! Originally written by Malorie Blackman and adapted for the stage by Dominic Cooke, this story is powerful, emotional, and so relevant. It tackles themes of race, oppression, love, and identity – all things that make for a gripping production.
Utopia Theatre have assisted in the casting for this show, to bring this play to life, and while the journey has been amazing, it’s definitely had its challenges. Casting has been a big one – finding actors who truly represent the characters is key to telling this story the right way. But with the incredible support from Utopia, I have no doubt we’ll make it work.
Utopia Theatre has been such a huge part of my creative journey. It’s where I found my voice – literally, through singing – discovered my love for acting, and now, I’m stepping into the world of directing. I’m so grateful to the amazing team behind the scenes who work tirelessly to make everything happen. I can’t wait to see this production come together, and I’m so excited for what’s ahead!”
